If you need any help, use
Here are some of the basic rules!
Elements of Graphic Design
-Lines
-
organize, texturize, guide the eye, provide movement, make a
statement, convey universal meaning
-Do not have to be straight
-Static, dynamic, and random to perform patterns or suggest
shape and movement.
-Shape- A shape is something that stands out from the space around it. There are uniform shapes, of which can be created with rulers and straight edges. A natural shape is something more like the shape of the united states. Very wild, no straight edges, just a shape.
-Mass
- a.k.a "visual weight." Mass is in every piece you make. It's the size and volume of the picture and what's in it. An example might be a picture of an amusement park. It's big! And because it's so big it gives something for the viewer to stare at! Another example could be the opposite! Some designers might take a whole magazine page, but only put one small picture in the middle of it. This way, all of the dead space will draw the viewer to the picture.
-Texture
- Texture is always a part of our designs whether intention or not.
-VISUAL TEXTURE- The texture appears from design elements (Lines, shapes, color, etc)
-TACTILE TEXTURE- Actual texture that you CAN feel. (post cards, business cards)
-Texture ex: Smooth surface of chalk, rough surface of cement, smooth glass bottles, fabric of potholders.
Photos of actual texture can be added and used as texture or fill.
This picture has a good texture that you can see and feel just by looking at it.
This picture shows an actual picture with textured filters over it using text.
-Color
- Color is what gives objects in an image their profile and character. For an example that I've already used, the red dress girl in Schindler's List: She drastically stands out because of the contrast between her and her surrounding. Color can make an object look like it's moving! I will give 4 images of contrast pictures, and answer these three questions-
1. Causes elements of the design to stand out or recede
2. Directs the eye to specific information
3. Does it create a mood? If so describe it.
Picture 1
1. This picture causes the sky and water to stand out. You can still see the city and the palm trees, but the first thing to come to your eye is the sunset and water set off by color contrast.
2. Like the first answer, this picture draws the eye to the pretty color of the water and sky.
3. This picture creates a very relaxing and warm mood. Thinking of watching the pretty sunset over the city on the beach just brings a warming sensation.
Picture 2
1. This picture is a good example of making an object stand out. The brown is the only color that draws the eye...;D pun intended. The brown stands out to be the only thing to draw your attention. If you take the editing out of this picture and you make it the normal color, the eye won't stand out at all! It will look like a normal eye!
2. Same answer as #1.
3. This picture creates an astonishing mood. The beauty of the eye makes you feel something. You can't quite tell what it is. It's almost like you feel impressed!
Picture 3
1. This picture is yet another good example of a pop-out picture. The structure in the back stands out because the two structures are completely black. Let's just say it's complete daylight, and the two that are normal rock color, and the one in the back wouldn't stand out anymore!
2. Same answer as 1.
3. This picture creates a "cold" mood. It feels as if you are standing in the shade, and you're really cold. But you want to go to the lightened part to get warm. This is because the color says the background is a warmer mood.
Picture 3
1. This picture is a perfect example of movement in a picture. The dress in the upper right hand side has a darker shade compared to the lower left hand side. The angle of her body indicated that she is turning. So when you look at this picture, you can see her spinning in a clockwise motion.
2. This picture does not point your eye to anything specific.
3. I don;t know about you but this picture's mood makes me dizzy.
Picture 4
1. This picture makes it look like the sky is moving toward you over the house. Because the top is a darker color while the horizon is a lighter color, and in combination with the streaks, it works out perfectly.
- A color can also be called a "hue"
-To "tint" a color, add black! To make a brighter hue, add white.
-RBG Red, Blue, Green. These are the primary colors.
-Color meanings- Green/Red- Christmas! Orange/Black- Halloween! You can make different 'feelings' with colors.
